how do i stop Imessage from capitalizing all letters of a proper name?

I am using an iPhone 5s with IOS 9.1 installed. When I am typing a message in imessage the systems always capitalizes all the letters of a proper name. If I type the name Ashley, it auto corrects to ASHLEY. If I type Gaby, it corrects to GABY. The system seems to recognize first names and auto capitalizes only proper first names. How can I get this to stop?

This is happening because you have a contact saved with this name in all caps. This had me baffled for a lonh time, but i finally figured it out. Search for the offending contact and edit it so that only the first letter of the name is capitalized and you’re all good. You’re welcome!

I think I discovered what the issue is. In my address book if there are any name is capitalized that name will be capitalized whenever it is used I think I discovered what the issue is. In my address book if there are any first names capitalized that name will be capitalized whenever it is used even if I have many other contacts with the same name that are not capitalized. For example, if I have the name KATHLEEN SMITH In my address book even if I have 20 other Kathleens with different last names and those contact names are not capitalized When I use Messenger and type the name Kathleen it will automatically change to uppercase when I use Messenger and type the first name Kathleen it will automatically change to upper case. When you find the offending contact and correct it to lowercase the problem goes away. pain in the ***.

So I was having this same issue. Turning off the contact found in apps did not work but it Lead me to solving my issues. My job recently changed to a Microsoft server and they capitalize all staff names. When I added it to my phone it automatically added contacts. I had to unclick contacts in the outlook email and it User uploaded filefinally stopped doing it.

The problem is a little bit more complicated than hoping the name in in your contacts. I noticed this behavior with one name, and one name only: Tim. I have multiple people in my contacts list with that name, but one of them was in all caps. For some reason, even though the name of the person I was emailing to was not in all caps, my iPhone default it to the all cap version. As soon as I corrected that one entry, the problem was solved.

So I confirmed that it is the way the names are formatted in your contact. Because I am using this without lock and had Outlook contacts on, and that list had names capitalized, that was what was causing the problem. In order to fix it I had to do an export of the names from Outlook to an Excel spreadsheet and use calculations so I confirmed that it is the way the names are formatted in your contact. Then I consider this a big. If you cannot turn it off. I have thousands of contacts, a very few might be capitalized, but not as many as come up. Even if it was directory related, it would take hours or days to go through it. Further, if I have a JOHN in my directory and just want to type a different John, I have to go back and do it again. It’s maddening. Apple needs to fix it.

You cannot stop it and it is immensely irritating, inefficient and time wasting.

Apple is gradually evolving into a userunfriendly irritant, which will be its commercial downfall if they don’t fix it and fix it quick.

Frankly, would I recommend Apple products to anybody? A year ago yes. Today, certainly not.

While that might give you some emotional satisfaction, it might be more productive to take the phone in for servicing. And leave feedback for Apple where they do read:

Hi - I never had this issue until I started using WhatsApp a few months ago (on an iPhone 6 which I've had for over 2 years; IOS always updated to the latest version). All the Christian/first/forenames that I type or speak into the 'phone who are in my WhatsApp contacts are automatically capitalised. Very annyoing, as it comes across as though I am shouting at my contacts and requires immediate manual correction. And no, the 'phone is not learning from me that I want my contacts' Christian names in lower case. So either it is a WhatsApp issue, or an IOS issue - or an unresolved clash of the two. I urge all users affected with this problem to report it to either/both the App feedback/technical help page, or the Apple feedback page (which is the only medium for customers to report issues or suggest improvements to Apple) Product Feedback - Apple
